Visiting the hygienist

The hygienist’s main aim is to prevent and treat gum disease by professionally cleaning your teeth, removing plaque and tartar (usually called a ‘scale and polish’). They will also show you the best way to keep your teeth free from plaque.

Plaque is a sticky coating that forms on your teeth throughout the day. The hygienist will also give advice about diet and prevention of tooth decay. A hygienist has an important part in oral health care and they will work closely with the dental team to provide the best care that is tailored to your needs.

Will the treatment hurt?

A scale and polish is usually pain free. However, if you do have any discomfort the hygienist can use local anaesthetic to help make it more comfortable. It is important that you let the hygienist know at the time so they can help with your pain.

Hygienist appointments are not available on the NHS, but a scale and polish is within you 6 month checkup. We would suggest an extra 2 hygienist appointments throughout the year to maintain your gum health.

We provide all of the above along with specialist guidance for both Children and Adults.
